What is a Novel?

By definition, a novel is fictional storytelling of considerable length – no less than 40,000 words. This is a broad definition by design, it can include everything from romance to historical fiction. There are, however, some qualifications a book must meet to be considered a novel.

It must be written in prose, meaning the text mimics natural speech. Generally, a novel is centered around the human experience. Thus, it should showcase the development of its characters. Like most written literature, it should have a setting, themes, and a strong plot.
